overkill: visual references
opening scene
A narrow city street with tall buildings on either side, most likely somewhere in DTLA
Has the look and feel of being in a big city, but still a small and quiet street that would be mostly deserted at night
I have recently decided to change the location of the story to Los Angeles instead of NYC. This means we can open it up to different location ideas but for now this is what I have been imagining.
scene 2: squad car interior
I want the focus to be on the inside of the car.
This means that showing the exterior streets and buildings is not necessary.
Also, the police car we’ll be renting will be on a trailer and not able to be driven around.
This means that we will use a different car to shoot the interior, meaning we need to avoid showing the outside of the car or the front dashboard.
I was thinking of shooting the interior car scenes in a studio so that we can have controlled lighting, instead of filming on the street. This will make it much safer, cheaper and easier than getting a permit to shoot with a moving vehicle.
That said, I also like these visual references below…
So I’d be open to shooting in a moving car if we decide that will be better.
SCENE 3: POLICE PRECINCT
This location is exactly what we need and will allow us to film the majority of the scenes in one place. However, it seems relatively small for an inner-city police station. We will need to light it and film it in a way that makes it feel more spacious than it actually is.
For example, the reception desk on the left is unnaturally close to the wall. This is the entrance to the police station where June gives her information to the intake officer.
We need to film the police officer standing behind the desk in a way that doesn’t show how small the space is.
HOLDING CELLS
scene 4: interview #1
our set:
scene 5: WALKING & TALKING
This is the door they will exit from.
There is a small hallway leading back towards the office area but the distance is quite short - probably not enough to fit in the dialogue.
I’d prefer them to have a brisk pace as they walk, meaning a longer hallway would be better.
Our other option is the holding cell hallway, lit and shot in a way that makes it look like a different part of the police station.
If we open the doors of the jail cells and light it so that the shadows are not visible, this hallway could be converted into a 2nd, separate hallway. Using a similar angle to the 1st image below, we can avoid showing the jail cells and put some posters up on the wall to make it look different. I want to make the police precinct seem larger than it actually is.
SCENE 6: VIEWING ROOM
damages, season 1 episode 1
A great visual reference for this scene is in the first few minutes of the pilot of Damages.
The website won’t allow me to take screenshots but you can watch the episode on Hulu here.
